A friend of mine, Norm Fisher, was telling me about his Dad's career as a CP
Dining Car Chef assigned out of Drake
Street yard in Vancouver.
He worked the Mountaineer a lot and their trip changed almost every year.
Depending on year and month, he worked as far east as
Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Portal and even Enderlin.

I am a bit surprised at the order of the train numbers, as the train
was 3 on the CP and 13 on the Soo; 503 must have been the number of
the C&NW train that handled the through cars St. Paul - Chicago.

Soo cars St. Paul - Moose Jaw, CP west from there. I wasn't aware
that a coach ran through to Chicago; I suspect a change of cars at
St. Paul for coach passengers also.

See comment below.

If the pattern used later was used, there were three separate diners
involved; C&NW Chicagi - St. Paul, Soo Enderlin - Moose Jaw or Swift
Current, CP Calgary - Vancouver

Either Soo or CP RIVER series cars.

Tom Madden was nice enough to break out the Pullman cars assigned to
both Soo and CPR with their assignment dates a while back, and I'll
list those cars so assigned during the 1941 Mountaineer season here,
and also copy the CPSIG LIST:
Andrade 2410I S SOO 24-Jun-41 22-Jul-41
Lake Mason 3585 S CP 29-Jun-41 23-Aug-41
Lake Isabella 3585 S SOO 2-Jul-41 25-Aug-41
Lake Weir 3585 S CP 3-Jul-41 26-Aug-41
Lake Eaton 3585 S SOO 8-Jul-41 27-Aug-41
Lake Chicot 3585 S CP 1-Jul-41 28-Aug-41
Lake Sanford 3585 S CP 4-Jul-41 28-Aug-41
Lake Mendota 3585 S CP 30-Jun-41 30-Aug-41
Clover Vista 4036B S CP 4-Jul-41 2-Sep-41
Fort Gibbon 2585D S SOO 27-Jun-41 3-Sep-41
Clover City 4036B S CP 26-Jun-41 3-Sep-41
Fort Keogh 2585D S SOO 28-Jun-41 4-Sep-41
Clover Summit 4036B S SOO 25-Jun-41 4-Sep-41
Clover Chalet 4036C S CP 27-Jun-41 4-Sep-41
Clover Pond 4036B S SOO 28-Jun-41 5-Sep-41
Clover Field 4036A S CP 23-Jun-41 7-Sep-41
Clover Castle 4036C S CP 24-Jun-41 8-Sep-41
Fort Grant 2585D S SOO 29-May-41 24-Sep-41
Fort Gaines 2585D S SOO 28-May-41 25-Sep-41
The cars that are shown as assigned to CP are assigned to the
Mountaineer for sure. The cars assigned to the Soo may be on several
other trains; no real way to tell. However, comparing the list with
the Official Guide listing above, please note that the CLOVER cars
are 8 Sec 5 DBR, the LAKE and FORT cars are 10 Sec DR 2 CPT.
In addition, these were the cars assigned full time, year round, all
8 Sec DR 2 CPT:
Ranger 3979A S SOO 1-Feb-40 21-Jan-42
Centalpina 3979A S CP 1-Sep-39 31-Dec-43
Centburne 3979A S SOO 1-Sep-39 31-Dec-43
Centsalva 3979A S SOO 1-Sep-39 31-Dec-43
Explorer 3979A S CP 1-Sep-39 31-Dec-43
Mountaineer 3979A S CP 28-Aug-39 31-Dec-43
Rancher 3979A S CP 25-Aug-39 31-Dec-43
Trapper 3979A S CP 1-Sep-39 31-Dec-43
There is some debate over where the tourist cars came from, none show
in this list except possibly ANDRADE; it's very likely they were CP
or Soo company owned cars.
The Pullman cars would have all been painted green at this time.
