I have a CP passenger schedule booklet from 1946 which shows that the
train (called the SOO-Dominion) was numbered as:
401 on C&NW from Chicago to St. Paul
3 on SOO from St. Paul to Portal
13 on CP from North Portal to Moose Jaw
3 on CP from Moose Jaw to Vancouver
The schedule actually makes no mention of the name "Mountaineer",
however, I have a similar booklet from 1954 that shows the names as
"SOO-Dominion" in the winter season and "Mountaineer" from June 26 to August
24. There is no mention of the Chicago section in this part of the schedule.
The train numbers are now:
13 on SOO from St. Paul to Portal
13 on CP from North Portal to Moose Jaw (through to Vancouver
in summer season)
3 on CP from Moose Jaw to Vancouver (winter season)
I guess the numbers were changed over the years.
