I understood that it was a test sponsered by the Department of National
Defence to determine if the units could run on crude during a time of
emergency. I was under the impression that only one unit was involved and
that the DND picked up the costs of repairing whatever damage was caused.

In 1965 CP tried using crude oil in GP9s 8661 to 8685 except for 8672
Bruce Chapman gave me some details. The test started in June 1965and was ended by March 68.
Must have been a smoky affair.
