I was just reading the info and discussion on the different CP subisidiaries
of the trucking business, yes, I remember Manitoba cartage, observing the
units on my number of trips stopping over at Winnipeg touring CP operations.
Smith Transport had a U.S. operating division "Smith Transport(U.S) Limited"
out of Ontario and Quebec to the New England States including New York. the
CP Cartage trucks were definitely green in my time especially seen in the
Maritimes and around Windsor Station, Montreal. Canadian Pacific Merchandise
Services were quite colourful units, the Panels on their pickups and highway
trailers. CPMS operated from Thunder Bay, Ont. to Vancouver Island.
Back in the 1960's CP's train #42 "Atlantic Limited" Montreal-Saint John was
met with a couple of Smith tractor-trailer units with CP Express traffic
destined to Maritime points over the highway system to Moncton, PEI, Nova
Scotia destinations, all this done at the east-end of Union Station. The
same applied with Smith arriving late afternoon to make connections with the
westbound Saint John-Montreal evening train # 41. Other traffic to and from
the "Atlantic Limited travelled on CP's Bay of Fundy Service Saint
John-Digby, N.S. Believe the year was 1957-1958 when Smith Transport
commenced operating east of Montreal to the Maritimes after CP purchasing
the company. On the Dominion Atlantic in Nova Scotia some CP Express trucks
were lettered Dominion Atlantic Red scheme, Cartage trucks green lettered DA
others could be found lettered CP.
In the Woodstock, N.B. area CP Express had the contract handling all CN
Express business. CP's trucking divisions is a "long story". "Anything with
CP on it I was interested".CP's trucking divisions in the last years was
commencing to be a large operation in the U.S., such as "CP America",Coast
to Coast & into Canada including the Vancouver area; which Milwaukee
Transportation the highway division of the Milwaukee Road, I understand
that's where CP America came from. I read somewhere mabe in the former CP
Trucks news CP America out of Louisville, Ky. had over 600 drivers in and
out of that area-sounds like a lot, or mabe it was Nashville, Tenn. In the
early 1970's a new UK Division-"CP Transport(London) Ltd." working with CP
Ships

CPR split their trucks into two divisions:
CP Express- decended from Dominion Express. Trucks were usually
smaller-1/2- 1-2 tons painted Bright red with a green shielded
bevear with a blue banner underneath saying express on the door.
CP Transport- Trucks were usually larger or with trailers. Painted
green similar to REA green with a red shielded beaver with a blue
banner underneath saying Freight on the door.
These shields are both available in the CPR Piggy back trailer-
yellow lettering decal set.
In Ontario and East, Smith Transport performed the Transport
services. Their colour was similar to royal blue in the 50s & 60s.
The tractors were blue and the trailers had a blue panel on the
side. I'm not sure what the ends looked like. Can someone enlighten
me? I plan to do a decal set with tractor lettering and two
different trailer panels. Thanks Jim for the photos.
In Manitoba & Saskchewan It was Manitoba Cartage. Green trucks
similar to CP Transport. My decal set covers 1930s - 1970s
In BC it was OK transport. Their colours were Royal blue similar to
Smith. I'm not sure when they stopped lettering their trailers and
trucks OK and started using the Canadian Pacific black script
(another Black Cat set). I plan to do the large block OK Transport
next year.
There's lots of holes in this so far but this is a summation of what
I know(about this). I have a poor photo showing the old shield
(world greatest travel system) on the side of a trailer. When did
Smith start using the big yellow trailer lettering? Soft tops are
another topic.
