Several reasons, beginning with the number of copies I would have to
print to make the unit costs even close to acceptable to buyers, and
that number -- in the several thousands -- is far beyond the market I
see for a revised edition.
Then there's the awkward habit printers have of wanting to get paid in
full 30 days after they deliver the books when it usually takes years
to recover the investment (never mind making a profit) by selling books.
Hobby shops, understandably nervous about the current economy, have
almost stopped ordering books. Sales to such places, and bookstores,
is the only way to ramp up volume of sales for a publisher.
As a hobby publisher, whatever book I plan on must be paid for out of
income from previous books. I have several projects 'waiting in line'
as soon as some more money comes my way.
So, if everyone reading this wishes to buy a number of books from
Nickel Belt Rails, ask for a catalog sheet. I'll send it to you by
Canada Post. When all the cash rolls in, it will be possible to get
new books out faster!
