Given today's prices for plastic RTR boxcars, i.e. the Hobbycraft
Fowler box car, even a plastic CPR van will go $40-50. I thought
Canadian Hobbycraft was working on a CPR van in plastic.

Actually there are at least three manufacturers with these kits.
Speaking from
experience the Norwest really isn't that complicated or time
consuming, and
I hear that the 1-piece body version from Kaslo Shops goes together even
easier.
What is prohibitive for me is the cost of these kits. At about $50 a
pop I can not
afford to equip my fleet. A decent shake-the box or RTR car for half
that price
would be terrific.

The item that is most needed IMHO is a wooden Canadian
Pacific caboose. There are none on the market
available, other than the excellent Norwest kit (which
I cannot foresee building until I retire).
Your suggestions for boxcars and gondolas are
excellent, but unfortunately only the tip of the iceberg.
