I find the ISO standard very useful for renaming my digital photograph files.
By starting with the date they are kept in chronological order within the file
folder. It also makes it obvious if a file accidentally gets dragged and
dropped elsewhere in cyberspace. I can quickly find it and move it back to the
correct place. My digital files also include much older scanned slides with no
automated camera data to keep that vital information with the image.

ISO's (International Standards Organization) standard is YYYY/MM/DD. Today
is therefore 2012/10/01. You will therefore see this reporting much more
often.
