The pratice was to put the MM on the left side of the car when looking
at it fom either side. But some were painted with the MM on the brake
end both sides. Why??? Don't know. I asked a locomotive engineer
friend about this years ago and he stated that the MM should be on the
left always but some cars were painted differently because that's how
the paint crew painted them, not because they were suppose too.
I have photo's of both ways. When painting a specific car, use photos
because the norm might not apply to that car.
