John, I can't help too much but from Yaremko's "Canadian
Rail Car Pictorial Vol. 7" it appears the cars were used
for syenite, cement, potash etc. I don't believe grain
was included. BTW, the above indicates many cars were
stencilled 'ASSIGNED STYEMITE SERVICE WHEN EMPTY RETURN
TO HAVELOCK ONTARIO'. I couldn't find what that was but
Riddell's CP Color Guide refers to 'SYENITE SERVICE'as
part of the stencil which is a non metallic mineral used

As to the square vs round hatches it appear, from the first
book, that the former were NSC built (originally with ten
hatches) with friction bearing trucks and the latter built
by MIL with roller bearing trucks. Then again MIL also
built the 6 square hatch hoppers as well in the latter part
of the '50s for use in cement service.
