I'm aware of the approach/distant signal indications; I was just making the
point that all the "absolute"/home (non-staggered) signals I've seen followed
this pattern (2 or 3 heads non-staggered at interlockings/CTC home signals, 1
head with "A" plate at siding switches in ABS/APB).
Intermediates/distant signals are the basically same in ABS/CTC.

Staggered two-headed signals were and are also consistently used as
Distant, Approach signals to controlled points in CTC and to sidings in
ABS and APB.
