I'm looking for some help in coming to an understandign of operations along
the waterfront in Vancouver, where the CPR mainline and yards dominate.
Lately, I've been doing some research of the old CNR dock along the
Vancouver waterfront, which used to be located near the North & West
Vancouver ferry terminals, at the foot of Main Street. The CPR 3 track
mainline running east from P & N yards (at the station on Cordova Street)
ran beneath the CNR Pier trestle that connected the Pier to Main Street.
Lately I have come across some photos and drawings showing trackage within
the CN Pier, and box and tank cars loading or unloading within the pier
building. Drawings indicate there were no CNR tracks leading to the Pier
from the CN storage yard further east. So I am assuming that the Pier
tracks were only accessable over the CPR line.
So the question is, would the CPR give the CN rights over its tracks to move
traffic into and out of the Pier, OR would CN have interchanged the traffic
to CP, CP move it into the Pier, pull it from the Pier and return it to CN?
If anyone has any recollections or information describing how traffic was
moved into and out of the CNR Pier through CPR trackage I'd like to hear
about it.
