Page 116 of "Crow and kettle" is a pic of 4104 in very fresh (or at least
clean!) script paint taken September 69. The beaver shield is gone, and there
is no sign of it being there. On the facing page is a photo of 4055 and the
outline of the missing beaver shield is clearly visible. In a July 72 photo
4104 is looking worn and typically grubby as the CLC engines were at the end of
their lives.
I had though I read something ages ago about 4104 being painted in script in
1969 but I can't find the reference now. Perhaps one of the BRMNA books? The
1969 photo would seem to support the idea of 4104 being painted in script after
Action Red being introduced, as the stripes looked perfect without bolt holes
for the shield, and I presume the shield would have been there in the Tuscan
era.

Craig,
Units 4052, 4053 and 4104 were painted into the script maroon & grey scheme.
I don't believe that they were done after the action red was adopted but I
could be wrong. Check the book "The Crow and the Kettle" by John Garden for
photos.
