I just uploaded two photos of the cars. The ones I shot were built in
the summer of 1978, and one shows the NSC logo. It is possible the
lower numbers might have been a separate order - I will keep my eyes
open. They were originally funded by the federal government for the
prairie branchline rehabilitation program in the bad old days when the
infamous Crow Rate was still in effect. A subsidy was not
"politically correct" but the railways themselves were not about to
invest in an service that would just lose even more money.
They are now just part of CP's ballast fleet, alongside the 457
series. CN had equivalent cars but they took the trouble to painted
out the funding note once it no longer had importance.
