A late addition:
And when I use my grass whip I wear at least safety goggles and preferably a
face shield.

I used to work for a State Park system. Someone, somewhere in the 105 park
areas in the state got hurt while using a 21" walk behind lawn mower. I
never did hear exactly what happened. The park department main
headquarters/administration office for the whole state park system came up
with a policy
for everyone using a 21" (or similar) lawn mower....that you MUST WEAR a
hard hat, face shield, (either the screen type or clear plastic type), with
the hearing protectors, at ALL times while using lawn mowers.
I was out in the middle of a large lawn mowing with all this stuff on..when
a park visitor came over and asked me, "What do you think is going to
happen while you're mowing??!!!"
I never operate lawn mowers without hearing protection and long pants, not
wearing shorts. However, hard hat and face shield for mowing is nothing
short of ridiculous.
