Subject: B#724- Part #1-From My Records.-Canadian Pacific In New Brunswick-Past
Years
The Following Information originally went to a Party in Nova Scotia-Thought I
would pass the info on to CP Sig group-as precise as possible. The Post was
forwared to a few others of-line.
Please go down:
Part #1
"The North Line"-McAdam-Woodstock-Aroostook(intermediate points)-Edmundston,
N.B.
This line could be very busy-especially during the Fall months and the
Maine(Aroostook Valley Railroad) traffic coming into Aroostook from The AVR
with U.S. grown potatoes destined to the U.S. markets via McAdam and CP
transfers running stead over to Vanceboro, Maine interchanging with the Maine
Central-or the CP route through to Windsor, Ont. and interchanging with U.S.
railroads-I guess for the U.S. Mid-West????. N.B potato traffic from the "North
Line" CP route to Canadian destinations.
Freights going McAdam north on that line and arriving were quite plentiful.
Motive power being a good number of 4-6-0's D-10 Class 800's, 900's
1000's(never observed the 1100's coming or going) Other power in the 1950's
period on freights being light smart stepping G-2 4-6-2's of the 2500 and 2600
series. On the St. Stephen-McAdam-Woodstock passenger service would be
streamlined 4-4-4 Jubilees of the 2920 series in their tuscan
red-grey-black-gold paint scheme engines 2926, 2928 and 2929. Engine 2929 was
working on this run back in 1942-1943(came brand new to New Brunswick in 1938(
Engines 2926(1949) 2928 came from Toronto in the 1950's. Other passenger power
on the north line being the G-2 4-6-2's like 2504(New modern tender) during the
war years), Engines like 2622, 2660 can't remember them all handling the
through passenger trains to Edmundson, plus other Woodstock runs. Light 4-6-2
G-2's that served New Brunswick and likely at times on the "North Line"
2500(later to DAR in 1946), 2503, 2504, 2515(went to DAR in 1949), 2581(came
from Montreal late 1950's), @2555, @2580, 2596, 2597(both Vermont & Maine
power)@2598, 2604, 2608, @2611, (Note: 2513 McAdam-St. Andrews 1949 through
1950's), 2621, @2622, 2624, 2626, @2627(Went to DAR), 2628, @2629, @2630,@
2644, 2657,@2659, @2660, 2661. Note: Symbol @ = equipped with feedwater heater.
This power over the years-could have been others.
A number of these locomotives handled Montreal-Saint John passenger trains east
of Megantic through Maine to McAdam on trains #39, #40, #41 and #42. 4-8-2's
2900 and 2901 took over McAdam-Saint John. The heavy 4-6-2 non-streamlined
versions of the 2300's, 2320's 2330's operated these trains
Montreal-Megantic-some smoke-deflectored. When the new semi-streamlined heavy
4-6-2's arrived in 1942 2390's and 2402 they took over the Montreal Megantic
section only and by 1943 extended runs to(I remember G-3 2414 black & gold on
eastbound train #40 out of Windsor Station Montreal in 1943) McAdam and a
number of months later to Saint John. Engines *2394, *2395, *2396, *2397 and
*2402. By 1945 new 2400's arrived and assigned to Montreal-Saint John passenger
runs they were: 2453, 2455, 2457, 2459, 2461-They were black & Gold with
stainless-steel boilers, firebox, an cylinder box-even with "WAR TIME" Aluminum
"Bells". Later they recieved the brass bells and repainted to Tuscan Red,
black-grey and gold scheme. Almost forgot the Boston "Gull" light 4-6-2 G-2's
handling this train Saint John-McAdam-Vanceboro, Maine. The 2500 and 2600's
were pretty nice-looking clean lines. Engines I remember being @2500,
@2598(rebuilt during war)@2611, @2627, 2657.
IN 1946 new G-5 Class light modern 4-6-2's 1255 and 1256 new from the builders
arrived. Engine 1255 was assigned to the Saint John originating Saint
John-Edmundston passenger but ran as far as McAdam and return to Saint John.
New 1256 assigned to the "Gull" Saint John-Vanceboro, Maine.
All the semi-streamlined heavy G-3 Class 2390's, *2394, *2395, *2396, *2397,
*2402, *2453, *2455, *2457, *2459 were all later re-equipped with 12-wheel
higher fuel capacity tenders 12,000 Imp Gals. for water and 21 tons of
coal(with 8-wheel tenders 18 tons, and 10,000 gals of water. Engine * 2461 kept
her original tender. By 1949 a sister *2467 came east(built 1948), had worked
on the TH&B passenger runs out of Toronto. Note: Symbol* = Tuscan
Red-Grey-Black & gold paint scheme. So much to tell on CP motive power in New
Brunswick.
The new modern light G-5 4-6-2's 1255 and 1256 when they first arrived were
black & Gold paint scheme with stainless-steel boiler, firebox and cylinder box.
Its odd never saw a 2-8-2 of the P1 Clas 5100's or rebuilds 5200's ex 2-8-0's
on North Line freights, although CP ran them of all places from Chipman to
Fredericton.
At Aroostook, in 1960's quite a railway town with 2-8-0 3429 the yard engine(ex
Brownville Jct. Maine yard engine.) Steel Cabooses at Aroostook two different
designs. CP go back to the late 40's if I'm right with steel vans. CN never had
them until 1967.
CPR was big in rebuilding steam throughout the years. There was only three
light 4-6-2 G-2 series not rebuilt with Vestibuled cabs and more modern tenders
being 2513, 2596, and 2597. A few others in Maine being the 2583, 2584.
In 1955 when the "Dayliner" service took over the Saint John-Edmundston run a
good number of the light G-2 2500 and 2600 series were assigned to freight
service including the "North Line".
During th late 1940's Toronto passenger engine semi-streamlined heavy 4-6-2
*2392(8 wheel tender) was sent to New Brunswick for a short period and assigned
to the Boston "Gull" Saint John-Vanceboro and a few runs on Montreal passenger
trains.
Heavy 4-6-2 "Smoke-Deflector" equipped *2332 came to New brunswick in the early
1950's(12-Wheel tender) assigned to the "Gull" for a period and running
freights Saint John-McAdam. Almost forgot heavy 4-6-2 12-wheel tender equipped
2307 came to N.B. in 1949 and assigned for a period on the "Gull"-ending up in
freight service Saint John-McAdam. Engine 2307 lost her tuscan paint
scheme9earlier presume in Quebec-Ontario- in New Brunswick just Black & Gold.
I could mention the 2-8-2's handling freights to Mcadam and Saint John like the
heavy 5300's 5400 to 5404 series then the semi-streamlined 5400's like the
5409, 5413, 5420's 5440's 5450's. Engines 5424 and 5426 in 1951 were handling
CP "Empress" liner boat trains West St. John-Windsor Station-Montreal.
