This thread is getting to be ridiculous. Most contributors are missing the
obvious and ignoring the facts. A classic case of "I have my mind made up,
don't confuse me with facts". First of all, if the roof lights were for
safety reasons why were they only applied to the passenger F's and why were
they only used on the Canadian? Secondly, the first train to run with dome
cars was the Canadian, which went into service in 1955, so the problem did
not exist until that time.
As for icicle breakers cars only coming into use in 1984, for the current
series of cars this may be the case, but I recall them existing long before
that. Perhaps not the same cars they use today. But their use even today
certainly should suggest that icicles were, and continue to be, a problem.
