Initially, in 1907, from the Twin Cities (the Soo didn't run to Chicago until
the CP arranged for the Soo to lease the Wisconsin Central in 1910)by way of
Portal, ND, North Portal Sask., over Crowsnest Pass to Yahk, then south to
Spokane. I don't think the run was ever extended to Chicago after 1910, but
there may have been through cars.
Most trains on the Soo didn't ran past St. Paul, and when the summertime
Mountaineer service did during the thirties and forties, the extension to
Chicago was through cars handled by the C&NW rather than the WC.
There is some evidence of CP through cars east of St. Paul on the WC; there is
extant the consist of a train that derailed the last car on the Chippewa River
bridge in Chippewa Falls in 1924, dropping the car (a parlor car) fifty feet
into the river. In the consist was a CP sleeper named NORTH PORTAL. One
instance is hardly enough to make any judgments as to what was going on; it
could have been a one time charter.
