Paul
I collected all of the consists that Fred Shannon put onto the
old CPSIG Yahoo group. I’m sure Fred would not mind if I posted some of them
again. Not sure how well this will work because the first thing I did when I
got the consist was to put it into an Excel spreadsheet. An interesting
example I noticed as I flipped through the sheets is one of the Eastbound
Dominion #8 to Montreal. The train was observed at Medicine Hat on May 7 1958.
The first 2 letters are the car class, AAR classification I believe, but I am
sure someone can correct me on that. The last 2 letters in parentheses are for
distinguishing features of the body – CS for curved sides, SS for stainless
steel (Budd), and HW for heavyweight car.
DE 1409 FP-9A
DE 1906 F-9B
BM 4784 BAGGAGE EXPRESS (CS)
CO 3011 BAGGAGE DORMITORY (SS)
CH 2244 68 SEAT COACH (CS)
CH 114 60 SEAT COACH (SS)
CH 507 26 SEAT COACH, 23 SEAT CAFÉ, 24 SEAT DOME OBSERVATION (SS)
TO GANDER 14 SECTION TOURIST SLEEPER (HW)
TO GUELPH 14 SECTION TOURIST SLEEPER (HW)
SS TUDOR 12-1 SLEEPER (HW)
SS RATHWELL 8-1-2 SLEEPER (HW)
RM THOMPSON MANOR 4-5-1-4 SLEEPER (SS)
SS MOUNTAINEER 8-1-2 SLEEPER (CP-PULLMAN) (HW)
DI ALEXANDRA 48 SEAT DINING CAR (SS)
RM CHATEAU IBERVILLE 8-1-3-4 DUPLEX SLEEPER (SS)
PO YOHO PARK 1-3 SLEEPER 13 SEAT BOAT TAIL LOUNGE 24 SEAT DOME OBSERVATION (SS)
As you can see, the train has a baggage/dorm (3011), a coach
(114), Skyline car (507), Thompson Manor, Alexandra (diner), Chateau Iberville,
and Yoho Park, all from the Budd stainless steel fleet. In doing a quick scan
of other days, there is a similar mix of Budd cars with heavyweight and curved
side cars, but mainly on the Dominion to and from Montreal. The Toronto
section of the Dominion consisted mostly of head end cars, except in the
summer, when a second section was (sometimes?) put on consisting mostly of
heavyweight cars.
The consists for July 20 and 21 show a similar mix of old and
new cars.

Subject: [cpha] CPR Dominion questions
Guys,
I have a few questions regarding the consist of the CPR "Dominion" passenger
train. I understand that after 1955 when the CPR "Canadian" train started,
that in the summertime when the trains were busy, that the Dominion would have
a Budd Skyline dome car and a Budd Park car added to the mostly heavyweight car
consist. Were there any other Budd cars typically seen on the Dominion?
Does anyone have some consists of this train in the 1955-1960 era or post 1960
that they would be willing to share? Or any information on typical consists of
this train.
Thank you in advance for any information.
