Michael, thank you very much for getting my email relayed to the group. That is
very much appreciated! Jon, thanks for the link to get signed up with the group
again as well! And lastly Ken, a compliment like that from someone such as
yourself is extremely high praise - much appreciated!
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone as well for providing more information
regarding your experience with CCH Axcess. Our firm has definitely had a mixed
bag of results and hearing from other firms experiencing similar trouble or
having like issues definitely makes us feel better from an IT service
perspective. Our poor Networking team has been banging their skulls against
this wall for almost a year and while it's not great to hear the product has
inherent issues it does give them some solace to know their theory that 'it
isn't us!' was probably accurate.
If anyone else has more to share regarding your or your user's experiences with
CCH Axcess Tax - I am all ears!
Thanks again,
Johnathon

Great observations being made by all here.
My firm has faced many of the same challenges. One of the advantages to the
cloud solution we chose (full ITaaS on Azure managed by Netgain) is that we get
to continue running all the on-prem versions of Tax, Practice, Engagement,
Document, etc., with all the robust functionality they offer, but we can access
them from anywhere and we don't have to maintain on-site servers anymore.
Resources can easily be scaled to meet changing needs, and my users have access
to 24x7 support even when I'm away.
Yes, we're totally dependent on our internet connection, but at our main office
we have full redundancy with two completely different types of internet
circuits, with automatic failover so that if either circuit goes down, we may
experience a brief disconnect but otherwise can resume work immediately,
picking up right where we left off. We also made sure that we are hosted at an
Azure data center that is close enough to us geographically that we have
minimal latency, so we rarely notice any keystroke lag or responsiveness
issues. And because the client and server components are all in Azure, with
only the RDP traffic traversing the WAN, there are none of the problems others
have mentioned with various mixed VPN configurations.

Thanks Michael and Ken for all the information you provided.
A takeaway I received from the conference is that CCH is planning to offer a
hybrid model of Document next year. It would utilize the Axcess interface but
use local storage in an effort to improve the speed/latency issues. The person
I spoke to regarding this was strictly a Document and Portal rep. I did not
have a chance to ask a Tax rep if they will be offering a similar model.
Granted, while this may help speed issues with Document, it may not be cost
effective. The rep I spoke to did not have pricing information for the hybrid
model.
Brian, regarding your question about CCH Axcess Engagement, CCH is rolling out
a product called CCH Axcess Financial Prep which is supposed to be the first
piece towards a cloud version of Engagement. Right now the functionality is
very limited and it needs more time before it can truly be called "Axcess
Engagement". My firm is in a similar position, we are all on premise, use XCM
and use Engagement. We were also quoted a substantially higher amount to move
to Axcess (Document, Practice Management, Tax, Scan). For my firm, I am not
sure it is worth it to move to Axcess at this point. The issue we have is
accessing Tax from outside the office. We have been doing what was stated
earlier, using a VPN to connect to the office and then using RDP to run Tax. It
is a clunky way to go about using Tax but it works. Also, I should mention I
have a small firm so it's easier for me to utilize these workarounds which
would be more difficult or troublesome for those supporting a larger firm.

Hi All:
Has anyone heard any updates from CCH about Axcess Engagement? Back at CCHUC
2013 I heard 2016; as of last year's CCHUC I was told "a few more years". We're
all on-prem, considering starting a move to Axcess Tax after this tax season -
but it sounds like we'd need to go from XCM to Workstream, as well as Practice,
to get the full effect of the converged environment. At last check, Workstream
is still missing some critical features/functions that we have in XCM. And,
without a commensurate reduction in on-prem infrastructure and/or IT admin
time, I'm not sure if Axcess is worth the 25% fee premium for just those
products without fork lifting the bulk of our data that's Engagement.
For Axcess Engagement I'm particularly curious if it'll be 100% online with
just a thin client - no more local file room or field mode. As Ken and others
have said, Internet access, particularly in the field for our audit staff, is
troublesome and not likely to improve dramatically, especially in rural areas.
If Axcess Engagement is a no-go for us due to connectivity requirements, should
we even bother voluntarily going to any other Axcess product before they pry
Pfx out of our cold, dead hands?

Johnathan's a sharp dude. Great response!
As for the cloud issue, particularly with speed, switching providers or
solutions (or even CCH to Azure) is not going to fix the problem, at best..
it's kicking the can down the road.
This isn't a "CCH problem" or a "firm problem" necessarily. Most issues seem to
be from implementation (VPN / SMB) with an aging product or from access issues
due to ISP/network.
From working on the other end of things for years at several companies (network
engineering / cloud provider), I can say it's not something easily fixed. The
best thing to address is the internet connection issue. It's a conundrum.
With a mobile workforce, you can't guarantee bandwidth or access. Because it's
hosted, it's a wild card for access. Audit teams and onsite work is a mixed
bag. You can issue hotspots and *hopefully* you get coverage... or use the
client network (a huge problem in several cases.)
Hosting it yourself or with a 3rd party provider (as mentioned earlier) doesn't
necessarily fix it across the board. You still have the client access issue and
now you're responsible for uptime/performance. One of the advantages of the
cloud is shifting *that* to a 3rd party provider. Again... since you still have
spotty/iffy connections.. the problem is still present.
Using the cloud provider will solve one half of the network problem if they did
their job, but again, we're back to scalability and access.
There's really no answer which will wave a magic wand over this problem. As
many firms are not in metropolitan areas with fantastic internet, it's here for
a while.

Forwarding Johnathon Templeman's comments per his request below. CPAGeeks
Admin, also note his email address request.
To add to the CCH Axcess performance discussion, I think my general impression
is these are CCH Axcess issues that can be resolved with incremental
improvement...this cloud platform isn't that old, so some of these things are
to be expected with first generation stuff. There isn't much data to go on yet,
so this is helpful info to hear others feedback. We're also a West Coast based
firm with 4 offices (California, Oregon, & Washington) and I know our internet
provider sucks really bad, and some offices are under provisioned as far as
bandwidth, but the CCH Axcess(tm): System
Requirements<https://support.cch.com/kb/solution/sw23697> appear to have modest
bandwidth requirements, but I think for us, the network latency may be an issue
with our substandard ISP, which we are in the process of swapping out now, and
these onerous contracts are near expiration, so how much is CCH vs our crappy
ISP issue. My impression is mostly CCH can do more to optimize things, and it
sounds like they are trying to do that. I'm also concerned when I hear CCH reps
say they're onboarding new companies with 1000 employees, and how will that
affect existing customers...is CCH scaling this appropriately? Some of these
are rhetorical questions, and the move to Azure will likely take care of those
issues I hope.
Here are the bandwidth requirements for CCH Axcess:

I hate to be a pest and ask for this favor but if you wouldn't mind the assist
I would greatly appreciate it! Here is the message I was attempting to send to
the group:
"Hi all,
First thanks Michael for relaying this information on CCH Axcess Tax. Our firm
has been transitioning all of our office locations this year and we have had
performance issues off and on at pretty much every location, some seemingly
have more trouble than others (which I personally think we can chalk up to the
size of the practice in any given office more than anything else).
That said, would anyone else be open to sharing their experience with CCH
Axcess Tax? Have you also experienced the slow calculations that Michael refers
to here? Have you experienced other performance issues? Or has everything run
pretty smoothly after your transition?
Our Networking team has been combatting this problem for weeks and weeks and of
course getting nowhere, because the issue is most likely with the service and
not with anything we have control over. Any information anyone can provide who
has made the transition to Axcess Tax would prove extremely helpful for us!
Thank you,

One of the key items we heard for CCH Axcess at the conference is they will be
moving to Microsoft Azure cloud platform. We heard a target of June for all
customer to be moved, although it sounds like some customers may be moved
sooner. The move to Azure should allow them better scalability, geographically
distributed data centers, as opposed to being in Hazelwood, MO or wherever. I
understand CCH Axcess is currently hosted by IBM, but they haven't made the
Azure move official yet for various reasons...they need to maintain IBM for a
while to effect the transition. I hope performance improves when they move to
Azure.
You're obviously going to gain/lose on cloud vs on premise. The on premise is
going to generally be faster, but with the cloud CCH Axcess, you don't have all
the server maintenance, no VPN/remote access solution is required for remote
user access, etc... Most of the performance issues with Axcess seem to center
around calculations taking a long time for the very large returns...I heard one
customer maintains their on premise instance of prosystem fx Tax to handle
these large problem returns...not really a solution for me. When we
transitioned to Axcess Practice, there was some reports that weren't available
in the Axcess Practice version, so we maintain the on premise for the 1st year
to get what we need...I don't recall the specifics, as I was brought in late to
the transition project which was already underway. With these cloud solutions
there are tradeoffs. We're willing to make concessions on speed/performance for
some of the other benefits, as long as the performance is reasonable. Some
people have a different interpretation of that, are impatient, so we're trying
to determine what is reasonable vs unreasonable and try to bring that up with
CCH to see what can be optimized further. The reporting has always sucked for
us/been slow/crashes periodically, but there are only a few that need to use it.

How is the performance of CCH(r) ProSystem fx(r) Engagement? Engagement is a
pretty critical component for us and currently we have it on premise (4
geographically distributed offices). We're also using the full CCH Axcess
suite, which has been acceptable performance for the most part, although we
have had some complaints about some calculations taking a long time, reporting
generally taking long/crashing/inconsistent, and a few random issues here and
there like printing/efiling issues with large consolidated returns.
FYI, I'll be at CCHUC18 next week BTW if anyone wants to compare notes on
setups.

Subject: RE: [CPAGeeks] Xcentric vs. Cetrom vs. Netgain vs. ??
Hi all-
Hope you're enjoying some breathing space now that we're on the other side of
10/15.
Thought I'd follow up on this post from last year. I really appreciated the
feedback that I got from several of you after asking this question. We went
through a rigorous selection process, and although all of the providers that we
considered had many benefits to offer, we ultimately chose Netgain as the best
fit for us.
We were recently featured in a case study describing our migration:

Subject: Xcentric vs. Cetrom vs. Netgain vs. ??
Hey, we just hit 40 members! Welcome newcomers. Continue to invite your peers.
My question for today:
I talked to several exhibitors at CCHUC17 who provide various levels of
Desktop-as-a-Service, including Xcentric, Cetrom, Netgain, and maybe one or two
others.
I know a lot of CCH firms use Xcentric, but I've mostly ruled them out for the
time being due to their geographic distance and the associated latency.
Anybody care to share their experiences with any of these providers, or offer a
recommendation for one i haven't heard of? Thanks.
