Hello Everyone !
One of the issues raised in the What IS thread has to do with how to
understand resistance. In psychoanalysis and some other modalities the method
is
to confront or challenge the resistance. In trauma work, as Peter Levine
and I understand, we welcome resistance as a source of information and also
an indication that the client is not yet ready or resourced enough to go
any deeper. In this case, we focus on building resources.
We shared this perspective with Bert in Weggis ,Switzerland during a five
day event with the three of us and our students...and Sophie was not
present. At the time, he agreed that his experience as a psychoanalyst had
encourgaed confrontation and that this was perhaps not the best option for
trauma
work. We also had concerns of confronting a client who had
clearly"frozen" or was dissociated , as "resistant". at the time Bert agreed
and saw
the need to facilitators to have training in understanding and resolving
trauma.
A previous post gave the impression that Peter supports Bert's approach
to traumatized clients and this is not the case. In our 40 year co-creative
relationship, the compatibility or lack of between SCW and SE has been an
ongoing topic. Last summer, we combined them in a Global Trauma workshop in
Zürich and it became clear in which ways the two are complimentary and
also ways in which they are not. There is a DVD of this 3 day event available
through Polarity Zentrum, Zürich. In one session where Peter and I were
working together with a client, he was moving on a developmental level
toward autonomy and I was working on the adult level with connection. We were
in essence happily sitting together in the same boat, with the client in
between, rowing in opposite directions.
All for now...
