You're welcome, David!
Further pertinent info from the 8-minute audio report of this event (from
the CBC website): the reporter said the descendents of Captain Gray
initiated the whole process by contacting the Tla-o'qui-aht Chiefs,
telling them that they wanted to formally apologize, and asking the Chiefs
how they should go about it. So the apology followed Tla-o'qui-aht
protocol. I think that's an important point; it showed a lot of respect.
(The Chiefs also took a couple of months to deliberate before they
responded.)

Thanks Bobbie
I'm sending the article of to  friend in Perth, Western Australia who has
close links with Aboriginal people and the reconciliation issue in this
country - this encounter on the west coast of Vancouver island seems an
ideal model for what may be possible in this country
the following report from the news article is worth posting
good luck to you Booby and thanks again

"We are sorry for the abduction and insult to your chief and his great
family and for the burning of Opitsaht," said Twombly, of Corvallis, Ore.
"We have heard your words and accept," answered Barney Williams Jr., the
band's chief councillor and beach keeper. "I feel relieved," said Twombly
after the apology. "It's actually hard to put into words. I feel excited.
I
feel honoured."

Hi David,
I did a bit of surfing and found another news story on the apology
(attached Word doc), with more comments by the Tla-o'qui-aht band's
chief
councillor. If the attachment doesn't come through, you can find the
story
at this link:

or I will copy and paste it in if requested.

Ta for now!
Bobbie
