It sounds like you need to install the motherboard drivers.  I don't know
what ver of Windows you are using, but assuming it's Windows 98, you need to
install the drivers from the CD that came with the board.  Win 98 needs
these chipset drivers to properly work with the onboard peripherals.  Win
2000 usually needs them as well.  Win XP usually just installs what it needs
to work.  Look for an inf chipset driver on the opening screen of the CD and
try installing that.
