If I had to make a WAG I would guess that the drive had not been defragged in a long time and was a total mess or the drive is low on space and Defrag couldn't shuffle the contents around enough in one pass to defrag it completely. The restarting may have been just a temporary measure to find a place to put data until space was cleared to place the data in contiguous clusters. I would run Defrag again and then again in a couple of days. Regarding third party defraggers........ I have never found them necessary. I use the defrag app from ME on this Win98 First Edition and when run on a weekly basis it takes under one minute per gig to defrag. If I immediately run it a second time it will finish before I can get back from the coffee pot. If it's a problem to run Scandisk and Defrag regularly put them both on the Task Scheduler for a weekly cleanup. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Computer Talk Shop http://www.computertalkshop.com Un-subscribe/Vacation, http://listoptions.computertalkshop.com List HowTo: http://faq.computertalkshop.com To join Computer Talk Shop's off topic list, please goto: http://computertalkshop.com/other_cts_lists.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------
