I think it ensures freedom more than any other licesnse. For those who don't know what we're talking about here, here's a run-down: Both licenses are open source licenses. BSD allows you to take the code and do *anything* with it, including embedding it in proprietary devices. The GPL allows you to do *anything* to the code, but you HAVE to make your changes, improvements, modifications, etc., available for free to whomever wants it. Thus, the BSD license is nicer for businesses who want to keep things closed, but the GPL ends up being directly better for the consumer.
