Difficult Conversations
Communication and collaboration failures come at a high cost - conflicts
that fester consume energy, sap creativity, and destroy teamwork. In
contrast, when conversations are handled well, teamwork and productivity are
enhanced, morale goes up, and better decisions result. Based on fifteen
years of research done at the Harvard Negotiation Project, and on the New
York Times business bestseller Difficult Conversations, this approach offers
a rich repertoire of skills and concepts that will profoundly enhance your
ability to initiate and maintain productive discussions in the face of
strong feelings and difficult topics. Participants will come away with:
* A step-by-step method for handling difficult conversations with less
anxiety and more success
* A framework for diagnosing what makes certain conversations so
difficult, and how to avoid the common mistakes that even the most
experienced professionals make
* Skills for breaking the cycle of blame, managing strong emotion, and
keeping even the most threatening conversations on a constructive track
* Insights into participants' own tendencies when the conversation
heats up, and how to overcome the fears that lead to a culture of avoidance
Collaborative practitioners face difficult conversations in many contexts,
within a case, with clients or team members or even within a structured
group like their practice or professional organization. As collaborative
trainers, we need to be aware of the groundbreaking work being done within
the field as much of our work in collaboration is about facilitating
difficult conversations.
