2007 ANNUAL CONFERENCE - REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
The International Alliance of Holistic Lawyers (IAHL) is seeking proposals
for workshops, presentations and discussions to be presented at our annual
2007 conference to be held May 3 through 6 in beautiful Asheville, North
Carolina.
In 2004, the International Alliance of Holistic Lawyers set the theme for
the next seven annual conferences to correspond with the seven subtle
energies of our lives, the Chakras. First, we explored the first energy:
that of "Community," known as our grounding and root support, our network of
bonding, of feeling safe, secure, solid, still, and stable. Outwardly it
brings us unto community and creates the infrastructure of laws and order.
It gives us a sense of identity, honor, support, loyalty, safety,
connection. In 2005, we explored the succeeding energy of Relationships,
relating and understanding others. This year, we'll explore Power, and in
the next few years, Peace, Justice, Vision, and finally, The New World,
esoterically that of Divinity or the God within us all.
About the Theme: The third chakra is called the Solar Plexus Chakra or
Manipura. It is located behind the solar plexus. Don't be deterred if you
are not familiar with "chakras" and some of the language expressing the
concepts. You are no doubt familiar with the concepts! This chakra governs
Power, specifically it gives us a sense of our personal power in the world.
The Third Chakra represents the realization that change is possible, that we
have the capability of doing it, and the path we are going to take.
The solar plexus is the place where we get those butterfly feelings when we
feel scared or powerless. This chakra represents our "get up and go," our
action, our will, our vitality, and our sense of personal power.
An appropriate concept for a healthy balance in this chakra is the archetype
of the warrior-standing strong, staying in touch with feelings, confronting
only when appropriate and quietly maintaining a sense of power. A healthy
third chakra can take on a task and complete it, take on a risk and not be
bound by perfectionism, or act in the role of leadership without domination
or self-aggrandizement.
Power, then, is seen as an act of combination, of joining together parts to
make a greater whole. When we embrace and combine all the parts within
us-our bodies, our emotions, our visions, our knowledge-then we emerge whole
and powerful.
If your power chakra is open, then you have a feeling of relaxed contentment
and well being, and do not get so easily drawn into arguments and power
games. You do not feel a need to play the games yourself... you are filled,
and fulfilled. You need nothing, and can choose to walk away from arguments
without needing to engage in a power struggle of proving you are right.
Location: The Conference will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in
Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville, North Carolina has a population of
only about 75,000 but is consistently on the Top 25 lists of best cities:
top 12 tourist destination, one of top retirement locations, top small city
for vegetarian restaurants, one of top cities for quality of life, etc. It
offers a vibrant downtown with spectacular mountain scenery. Recreational
activities include hiking, mountain biking, hot springs, city nightlife, art
galleries, the famous Biltmore House, and the Blue Ridge Parkway and Folk
Art Center, just to name a few.
Conference Dates: The Conference will begin on the evening of Thursday, May
3 and end at noon on Sunday, May 6. Presenters are encouraged to attend the
entire conference.
Selection Criteria and Requested Topics: The theme of the conference is the
third chakra and the title of the conference is "Power, Leadership and
Values".
Proposals will be selected on the basis of relevance to the theme,
conference participants and the mission of IAHL. All presentations must
comply with IAHL policies and procedures. All proposals should directly
address the issue of how the topic is relevant to the conference theme.
Quality of the proposal and experience of the presenter will also be
considered. Local members are encouraged to submit proposals as conferences
typically are opportunities for showcasing local talent. Some otherwise
excellent programs may not be chosen if they do not fit with the character
of other presentations.
The ideal program will be no more than one hour long but exceptional
programs over one hour may be considered on a case by case basis.
Possible topics include but are certainly not limited to: Power vs. Force;
Drama Triangle; Overcoming Victim Consciousness; Transforming Anger; Change,
etc. In addition to the third chakra issues named in our title, presenters
are encouraged to consider that blockages of the third chakra manifest as
anger or a sense of victimization.
IAHL Mission: To transform the practice of law, through education and
support of holistic practice.
IAHL Vision: The IAHL envisions a world where lawyers are valued as healers,
helpers, counselors, problem-solvers, and peacemakers. Conflicts are seen
as opportunities for growth. Lawyers model balanced lives and are
respected for their contributions to the greater good.
Keynote Speaker: A keynote speaker has been confirmed. Sharif Abdullah,
J.D., a lawyer-peacemaker who is a catalyst for change. Sharif is the author
of The Power of One: Authentic Leadership in Turbulent Times and Creating a
World That Works for All and director of Common Way,

Compensation and Expenses for Presenters: IAHL is a nonprofit organization
and is unable to compensate presenters for either their services or their
expenses. To recognize and acknowledge the contribution of presenters, IAHL
is offering a reduced conference registration fee for speakers.
The Conference Planning Committee includes J. Kim Wright, J.D., Jennifer
Foster, J.D., and Laura Parrett, J.D. Their emails are below. The Committee
will review the proposals and select programs for presentation at the
conference by February 28.

Proposals should include: (1) title of workshop, (2) format and time needed,
(3) name, address, phone, and e-mail of presenter(s) and 50-75 word bio(s)
for inclusion in the conference brochure, (4) workshop description of up to
3 pages for inclusion in conference brochure, (5) proposed outline/content
topic and material to be covered, and (6) A/V and other equipment needs*.
*We don't guarantee availability of all possible AV equipment and encourage
presenters to bring their own.
The deadline for receipt of proposals is February 15, 2007. Receipt of
proposals will be confirmed by written notice after they are received. If
you have not received a confirmation within 5 days of your posting/e-mailing
it, please contact us by telephone at 828-279-7878. Presenters will be
informed as soon as selections are made, but no later than March 10, 2007.
