One thought: we also address shadow adverts in ways similar to what Sandy
describes. We have, sometimes, invited shadow advisers ( like parents of
clients) to meet with some person of the professional team, depending on what
the issue is.

Hi Tom,
I've done well over 400 divorces, primarily as a neutral financial
professional, and in virtually every one of them, each of the couple always
has one or more shadow advisers - friends or family who have been divorced
and now are telling my clients what they should do based upon their divorces.
I start off my introductory meetings with clients talking about this dynamic.
I also tell them that each of the 400+ divorces I worked on has had different
outcomes - even with similar financial profiles - because each one is
dependent upon meeting the values and high-end goals of each of the clients.
I urge them to spend more time focusing on what their high-end goals and
values are as they are more indicative of the options that they will consider
before coming to an agreement. What works for one couple may or may not work
for the another couple. And whatever the desired outcome for one client, must
also meet the needs of their spouse otherwise they won't reach agreement....

Good morning. If anyone is willing to share ideas or resources for a
practice group meeting program on shadow advisors, please pass them along.
Our group is small and our experiences may not be reflective of the issues
folks are seeing elsewhere. Even if the issues are similar, the more
possible solutions we can add to the toolbox the better off the process and
our clients will be.
