Dear Josh,
Joan Kelley PhD has done a great deal of research and reviewed research on
the issues of parenting schedules. She just did a 2 day training for our
practice group. I suggest you contact her and get your eyes on some of her
material.
While I agree with Josh that there is no one recommendation for all
children of any age, and, implicitly, that recommendations must be tailored to
the needs of the children, the ability-resources-style of the parents and
other factors influencing the practical matter of parenting plans, Joan also
makes the point that a certain amount of time is vital to having a real
relationship with both parents, that a father's (the one most likely to get
less time) real involvement with children has a major effect on their
development and on his continued support of his family. It does make a
difference
--how much time, the kind of time, and whether a father is active in the
child's actual life and growth.
Joan is clear that this is true and needs to start early in order for a
three year old (or younger) to have that real relationship. Care, of course,
must be taken to make arrangements honoring the child's separation fears,
etc, but that a willing mother is needed to really make this happen. So
the couple dynamic is also key. There are gradual ways to plan this that can
be included in a parenting plan, if the couple really is prepared to work
on behalf of the children's needs.

The problem you're going to have is applying probabilistic research to
specific kiddos. There are multiple issues to consider (I recently was part of
a presentation on this issue regarding children under 3 at the ABA FLS
meeting in Ft. Worth) and there is no "one" recommendation for children.
Depending on the specific needs of the child and other fact/case specific
issues
you're going to have different recommendations. I'll try and post my cites
later when I'm able to grab my copy of the paper we did.

Subject: [CollabLaw] Parenting Time Research?
Josh Rampi asked me to post this - please reply to
_hopecounseling@hotmail.com_ (mailto:hopecounseling@xxxxxxxxxxx) - Kemi
Dear List-Serve,
I am looking for any recommendations for literature (journal articles,
books, news reports) regarding parenting time schedules and their
effectiveness. I have a client who is interested in learning more about how
the
following impacts her/his children (children between ages 9-12 years old): 1)
the
number of transitions vs. block times with each parent, 2) importance of
face to face time with each parent at the cost of more transitions for the
children. The client is strongly in favor of longer periods of time with
each parent, one week rotation (i.e. 7 days with each parent, transition,
than 7 days with the other parent), but is open to considering other options
if the literature states otherwise.
I'm not sure if there are resources available to address these specific
questions, but thought that I could tap our collective brains to see what's
out there.
Please email your responses to hopecounseling@xxxxxxxxxxx
Thanks for your help,
