Hi Donna,

This is a difficult issue and I thank you for throwing this out for
suggestions.  In addition to the things that have been mentioned, I think it
is important to send information about collaborative practice to your client
from the moment you get a phone call, (by email if you can).  That  early
information is often shared with the other spouse before they have retained
an attorney and is therefore, less suspect.   Among other things, I usually
send a copy of the Handbook that is included with Pauline's book.  Because
it has the ABA stamp of approval and is extremely well written, it often
gets the attention of the other spouse and overrides the suspicion that this
is all a setup.

Subject: [CollabLaw] Addressing Reactive Rejection of CL by Other Spouse

O Wise Ones,

Can you give insight or advice for this recurring theme:  one spouse
learns about CL and would like to use it, but the other spouse
instantly becomes convinced that, since it is being proposed by the
now-distrusted spouse or his/her representative, the CL process must
be a trick, designed to disadvantage her or him.

Is there an approach that would help us help our clients see beyond
an initial reactiveness, in spite of everything?

Best regards,

Donna Beck Weaver
