Just to add my two cents...
Another alternative to arbitration or mediation is a consultation.
I often meet with separated parents who often do not appreciate the breadth of
options to resolve any given parenting dilemma. They are stuck on two polar
positions. Hence the value of a consultation would be to breathe more life and
information to the decision making process thus increasing opportunity for more
creative problem solving. The role of the consultant then is not to arbitrate
or mediate between the two positions, but rather to generate a range of new
alternatives for consideration.
In family therapy terms we refer to this as actually increasing the complexity!
Best to all.
