Alright Charles your “tar” file isn’t the actual program at all what it
actually is if you read the download description is the “source files” so what
you need to do is go to https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Building_On_Linux ;
and basically build audacity yourself and then you can install it... giving you
complied it successfully. Otherwise you need to use the newest version or find
someone else who is compiling older versions still..
