CISB 102 Lesson 4 Question 4

Before the Web, there was Gopher.

Before Gopher there was Telnet.

There was also a hypertext directory of telnet sites - Hytelnet.

Hytelnet was a worldwide directory of telnet sites on the Internet compiled in
1990 by Peter Scott.

This was used much as Yahoo! Is used today.

You can find information and the archived list here:

http://www.lights.com/hytelnet/

I didn't need to learn Telnet's uses - I used them on a daily basis from 1987
-1991!

I was shocked to learn that MSU still has remnants of their Merit IBM Gateway
active,

telnet://ibmgate.msu.edu

The Magic online library catalog is located:

telnet://magic.lib.msu.edu/

And I learned you can still connect with UofM library from Magic!

I also learned my wife's old msu e-mail account was active; I logged on and
changed her e-mail forwarding address because the address it was being
forwarded to was inactive - she changed jobs and forgot about the old address!
