Great to be back on the water after the long shut down!
4 or 5 gray whales
500 common dolphins
100 6th graders
I was on the other boat full of Simi Valley 6th graders today. Good kids, many
of whom got drenched by waves coming over the sides of the boat on the way out
and then shivered through the rest of the trip. Three unaffiliated adult
passengers (a couple from Russia and a man coincidentally from Simi) put up
with the noise and youthful energy well.
We went around the back of Anacapa to find the whales. The first gray kept his
distance and showed himself only minimally. Then hundreds of playful dolphins
surrounded us to everyone’s delight.
Moving toward Santa Cruz, we met two or three more grays. One fluked to send us
on our way. As we turned toward home, we met one more who seemed to wave with a
fluke as we passed.
Such a gift to be out on the ocean with these magnificent creatures.
