I was on one of the two IPCO boats full of 6th graders from Simi today. The
kids were loud, but good. We saw a couple dozen common dolphin mid-channel, a
bunch of southbound gray whales right by Santa Cruz and Anacapa, and then the
strangest thing happened. I believe we startled a napping minke whale just off
the bow of the boat. I saw a big swirl of water, and then a dark, angular
shape head straight under the bow...and then a big thud!!! I rushed to the
back of the boat, and a minke surfaced a ways off numerous times. Though no
one knows for sure, the whale seemed to be ok. But lots of worried kids!
