Morning trip:
1 gray whale
1000 common dolphins
1 harbor seal on our way out of CI Harbor
A solitary gray whale in the shipping lanes must have picked up some gear along
the journey. It didn’t seem to slow him down, but he was trailing a small buoy
behind him.
Afternoon trip:
6 gray whales, plus more in the distance
2000 common dolphins
We spent time first with a pair of smallish non-demonstrative grays and then
traveled quite far out (east of Anacapa) to hang out with four larger grays who
enjoyed showing off their enormous flukes. There were several other spouts in
the distance.
Beautiful calm day. Great visibility. Nice, happy people.
I noticed a lot of plastic litter floating in the water, which I don’t usually
see. One of the little kids aboard even commented on the trash in the water.
There were only about 20 passengers on each trip. All southern Californians
except for a family from Montana in the morning and a South Dakotan in the
afternoon.
Captains Jake and Jeff and, of course, Chef Paul were all aboard and all great.
Feeling happy,
Leslie
