It’s always a pleasure to help inaugurate the gray whale season on Boxing Day
with the Ranger 85!
Morning trip
1 whale (species undetermined)
250 Common Dolphin
A few gulls, cormorants, & pelicans
It was a nice calm day. Started with overcast skies. Hooked up with a nice
pod of dolphin early on just off Port Hueneme. From there headed for Anacapa.
There were many scattered dolphin f during the rest of the trip. After a nice
look at Arch Rock we headed west along Anacapa before turning for home. Judi
inside Platforn Gina a fluke was spotted, but that was it.
Afternoon trip
6 Orca
400 common dolphin
With an assist from, and a large thank you to Dino Dal Bon and SB Whale
Watching we were able to hook up with pod 140b (5 female orca with one calf.
The highlight for me was 250 common dolphin fleeing for their lives - none were
caught while we were there! We stayed with the pod of orca until it was time
to head back to Channel Islands Harbor.
Thanks to Captain Jake, Adon on deck, and Jimmy in the galley for a great start
to their season.
Always grateful,
Del Hanson
