Naturalists,
I was not on the morning trip, but the report was 5 gray whales, 2 blue sharks
and 1 basking shark.
On the afternoon trip we found 5 gray whales, no dolphin. Three were together,
possibly mating, one was solo and shy, and the last one was plain WEIRD.
We found this juvenile gray, about 15 feet long, and it appeared to be lunge
feeding at the surface. We were near a few lobster traps, but also the sea
birds seemed to be feeding. While I know this seems unfathomable, that is what
captain Joel thought was happening. And it's hard to disagree. There was some
speculation that it was or might have been entangled, but we got just great
views, their seemed to be no entanglement. It swam in lazy circles at the
surface, frequently with it's mouth open, and often coming quite close to the
boat. It was very fascinating and unusual.
Happy sightings!
