Three firefighters sustained minor injuries. After transporting the three firefighters to a local hospital in his city vehicle, DC Gonzales returned to his station. DC Gonzales made one more emergency call at 1042hrs to a fire alarm activation. Later that morning, DC Gonzales complained of pain in his neck, a headache and flu-like symptoms. He didn't feel he could safely make the 60+ mile commute to his home, so he slept at the fire station until approximately 1400hrs when he left on sick leave and drove home. He felt so poorly when he arrived at his home in Jasper, TX that he drove directly to his physician's office, where he was diagnosed as suffering a heart attack. He received medication and was admitted to a local hospital. Over the next few days, DC Gonzales underwent several medical procedures including an arteriogram, balloon angioplasty, and insertion of four stints. He was released from the hospital 10/29/2003 and was reportedly feeling much better. On 11/05/2003, DC Gonzales was found dead at home by his wife, having reportedly suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest.
