Dear all,

This is for all of you and not only for specialists of any one class.
It has been on the making for almost four years, but put on hold almost two years ago due to the work associated with WAG 2009.

The aim of F6 competition classes is to offer competitors, spectators and media competition classes that are attractive, enjoyable and challenging for competitors but also spectacular, easy to follow and understand for spectators and media.

Contrarily to most other air sports, aeromodelling has many facets, but presently we are only offering soaring and aerobatics. I propose to add another class : racing.
So as to make things clearly understood :
For those who know the F3D and F5D racing classes, it is easily clear that they are not suitable for spectators attractiveness because races are so fast that it is almost impossible to detect who is leading, because speed makes them dangerous and because they are repetitive. I believe there is room for another racing class that is not purely based on speed, so that the races are easy to follow. After all, races are not based on all-out speed (in any class there are restrictions) but on who finishes first.

There is no secret that the initial idea for this class came from discussions I had in 2001 with Peter Besenyei, the designer of the Red Bull Air Races (now an FAI class). Many changes, however, were necessary to make it suitable for model flying and operation on a flying field at relatively close proximity to spectators.

About WAG, it must be known that a WAG organiser may select the events he wants to organise from a list of events submitted by FAI (but must pick most of them). I believe there is room for another modelling class at future WAG and, in any case,I believe the proposed class is suitable for local contests able to attract (and keep) spectators. I firmly believe the class would be attractive to modellers.

I append an initial draft of the proposed competition class. I need input from everybody. In the draft, what is in red is a proposal waiting for more advices while comments are in blue. Nothing is cast, however, so any comment is welcome. What is important to know is that we have deadlines : for the class to be in the proposed list for WAG 2013, the rules must be final in March, 2011, so I propose to submit provisional rules next October (to be included in the next CIAM Plenary agenda and voted upon next March) and run test events (any organising club and any pilot would be welcome) in the course of next year.

I do not want to make this email longer than necessary, so I wll explain later the reasons for anything you may have questions about. I would especially appreciate comments from Ken, Marco and Mario.

Guy R.
