this was posted to one of the qcad mailing lists.
i was told it was ok to repost as long as it was understood that this is a
preview and not a feature in the stable qcad tree.

You can insert bitmaps in the background of the drawing and then trace
them (e.g. with a graphic tablet or the mouse).
