Yeah, as Jason mentioned, there are very friendly controllers active,
specially in VATSIM (I've met some in the IVAO network as well). the initial
contact can be extremely hard. As you know some people have very quick
comprehension of stuff, So as soon as you say that you're blind and you use a
voice activated add on, They quickly grasp it and go on with it. Some
controllers make no attempt to understand what you say, but still will clear
the runway for you and give you clearance to slew into it. Some of them,
specially in very busy airports (Such as EGLL, KJFK and such) Might refuse to
cooperate. At that time It's always good to just disconnect and continue your
flight offline, Because VATSIM and IVAO are both heavily moderated networks.
If you're covering an area as an Air Traffic Controller, You are responsible
for all the traffic and If you accidentally screw up a pilot's flight, They
can file a complaint and you'd lose your ATC ratings.
This is both a good thing and a bad thing. Bad thing about it is that
sometimes ATC instructs you to do a thing that is not possible to do with
Itsyourplane. for example a holding. or a procedure like, "Go direct to
Rodeville.". most of the time, You can ask them to give you radar vectors.
but sometimes for whatever complexity they reject your request and You will
have to disconnect.
Good thing about this is that while you're in the air in an controlled
sector, You can expect everything to go smooth and perfect. Since almost all
of the controllers pass some sort of training and examination to get
certified, They'll sort traffic pretty good and everyone performs their own
procedure in a professional manner and You will have a very good online
experience.
Now, This does not mean that you will not get stupid controllers giving you
wrong vectors or forget to vector you at all. The last one is very extremely
rare. Because they always monitor each traffic very closely, so if you manage
to drift off of your corse They'll quickly react.
Once or twice I remember that a controller dumped me right into the ILS
path something about 5 miles out of the runway and asked me to land. It was
clear that they were not paying attention and wanted me to just do a visual
approach and land the thing, but that was not possible at all.
And while we're on the controllers subject, You'll find out that there are
some dedicated members in VATSIM or IVAO network. If you fly a route that's
under their coverage much more often, They begin to recognize you and you do
not need to do the "/private message hello I'm a blind pilot..." thing every
time you want to do a flight. Oh and yes, You'll have to do this every time
you want to fly If the departure area is controlled....welcome to online
flying!
I will talk about controlled areas and things like that later though.

For online flying, You'd need to know Itsyourplane very well. It does not
mean that it's going to take a very long time to do that though! I'm just
saying that because sometimes you need to do some...very not standard
procedures with Itsyourplane, which the result behavior might confuse you.

I just saw your mail about Pilot Edge. I think It's a very good thing to
start off in a small online community. You will probably have a very good
time. the things that I said above are mostly regarded for VATSIM and IVAO
networks, since they're huge and thousands of online pilots and controllers
are active there. I think with an online community like Pilot Edge, things
might be much more easier since you can find friends much more faster and
they might not be so much strict on standard procedures.
I'm still working on the guide. one of the tools is giving me some trouble
and I'm trying to fix it. I'll write it as soon as I can! promise!
