Hi Andrew

Updated guidance for branches - Dive Leaders conducting try dives

BSAC Dive Leaders can now conduct try dives in their branch provided there is
a Nationally Qualified Instructor on site to supervise.

Enabling Dive Leaders to conduct try dives is intended to help clubs get new
members by increasing the branch resources available for try dives.

Previously only Assistant Dive Instructors and above could conduct a try
dive. The move to allow Dive Leaders to conduct try dives has come following
feedback from clubs and members, in particular the Kernow group of BSAC
clubs.

The below must be adhered to when a Dive Leader is conducting a try dive:
A Nationally Qualified Instructor (NQI) should be in the pool area to
supervise and answer any questions the Dive Leader may have.
The try dive should be conducted in a warm pool environment no deeper than 3m.
The ratio of try diver to Dive Leader should be 1:1.
The Dive Leader or NQI should set up the try dive equipment.
The Dive Leader should give a SEEDS brief and buddy check.
The try dive should focus on letting the potential member swim underwater and
use the BCD buoyancy controls. No underwater skills eg mask clearing or reg
retrieval should be conducted on the try dive.
The Dive Leader should conduct a REAP debrief.
