Hi all, The Smith's Longspur field trip into the Shreveport Regional Airport was a success today. Eight DETERMINED observers joned me for a 4+ mile walk- as traced out from Runningmap later!! We found the Smith's and a few other good ones, along with some interesting comparisons to previous LWBA years for Shreveport W quad. Clear, 37 degrees calm/ light W/N beginning, light-to ~5 mph most of survey, then 57 degrees calm/ light ending. We had a successful run in search of Smith's Longspur with 11 individuals found. Other bonus birds were Sprague's Pipit- 2 (usual, but missed this season on S'port CBC) and Henslow's Sparrow, which probably occurs more often but seldomly found here. 49 species (+1 other taxa) American White Pelican 40 commuting group Black Vulture 2 Single group Turkey Vulture 12 Scatt 1-4 Northern Harrier 1 possibly 2, fem-type. LOW! Missed HOLA. Have not had HOLA in some time Sprague's Pipit 2 Fairly closely associating. One individual gave better circling flight display, calling, then steep drop and parachute before hitting ground a distance away. The other individual relocated a short distance to West after calling and brief, higher uni-directional flight, before dropping fairly close by. It then relocated a short distance several times low, dropping and remaining hidden as we approached to observe, before relocating farther away. Cedar Waxwing 6 " Smith's Longspur 11 Charlie got some DOWNRIGHT AMAZING flight photos of an adult male and good ones of a probable ad fem/ or possible first winter male. There were 2 separate groups. First group initially flushed from the sparse, patchy Aristida and lichens/ reindeer moss giving rattle calls just S-e of runway, then several singles- circled for some time before putting down ~300 yards to Southeast. Second group flushed closer to Southeast, then singles flushing nearby from ditch area once again. There appeared to be 3, possibly four ad males total, with gleaming white upperwing lesser coverts, strong dark auricular outlines and heavier buff below within the groups. Light was fairly tough depending on angle to discern this, though. Both groups circled several times and excellent flight views and distinctive hard, rattling flight calls were had by all. Pine Warbler 3 1,2 " Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle) 34 Scatt "- largest numbers on N end of woods. Chipping Sparrow 1 " Savannah Sparrow 47 Higher than S'port CBC but low for area, considering the excellent wind/ weather conditions and a.m. survey. Henslow's Sparrow 1 Brightly marked bird relocating toward W 70th from lower field with taller Andropogon/mix. It continued to fence to S-e, then flushed again through fence and across W 70th into underbrush of taller pine/deciduous mix. Le Conte's Sparrow 9 Lower field Ammodramus sp. 2 There was a single dull bird that was possibly drab Henslow's. A second bird with stronger flight and straighter-tipped tail looked good for Grasshopper. However, this is not a good place to attempt following, then encircling Ammodramus in attempts to get them to perch up- as there is zero shrubbery/ stiff weeds for them to do so anywhere in these fields.
