Hi all, Again, lots of Alder Flycatcher- and singles of other Empids. Very high
count of EAWP for this early!

Red River National Wildlife Refuge- Headquarters Unit, Bossier, US-LA
Aug 14, 2013 6:40 AM - 8:50 AM
Protocol: Traveling
1.0 mile(s)
Comments:     Birded in part with Refuge Manager Terri Jacobsen for approx 30
minutes mid-survey. 2 observers (in part), 2 hrs, 10 minutes (0640-0850) ~1
mile walked. Areas birded were from Headquarters building, then N along
overlook trail toward and just S of Scott Dickson's place, then back S toward
the building along the levee. I then checked the back loop and Chocolate Trail
for additional Alder and other migrants between 0900 and 1030- for an
additional ~3 miles. I added migrants and others to the list found there that
were not found during the early survey, which is mostly reflected in the list
below. Other "sedentary"-types, such as CARW, NOCA, CACH, etc., were not added
while birding there.

Although my recent post regarding calls of Alder Flycatcher and other migrant
Empidonax was by no means meant to be complete, I failed to mention another
more frequent call given by Alder. I would describe it as "tureeyih". By this
description, the call might seem rather drawn-out/ longish but it is actually
rather short. This call is very close to Yellow-bellied Flycatcher's "turee" or
"tuur-yiih" call, which is also in turn, close to a similar call given by E
Wood-Pewee. However, YBFL and EAWP calls are more drawn out and more clearly
whistled, with YBFL averaging shorter, more sibilant/ hoarse and also higher
pitched and more emphatic between those two. Alder's version is much faster and
lacks the sibilant quality, yet has a hoarse/ buzzy quality like many of the
other Alder calls. Although faster than similar calls by EAWP and YBFL, the
Alder call is also more three-parted than the aforementioned two- with a
distinct but short "long e" sound to the
center portion of the call. This call can also be heard on Stokes. I also
attempted to get recordings of it today.
