David Raines:

Congratulations on your 17 Aug. White-throated Sparrow record
at your feeder. That is an extremely good record.

I am not aware of an August record for the White-throated in this
region. They usually arrive in late September to the first week
of October.

Of course, there is always the chance that your bird lingered
behind all summer and did not return north during spring migration.
Birds do that sometimes. It may have been in the area but not
at your feeder. At least you didn't see it if that was the case.

Whatever. That's a very good bird.

Speaking of the Spotted Sandpiper around Laurel Dam. I have
noticed that they frequent the spillway at Middlebrook Lake dam
in Bristol, TN and spend a lot of time feeding in the rushing stream
flow on the spillway slope beneath the dam. That's long been a
good place to find several species of shorebirds.

Thanks for the report and

Let's go birding.....

>I saw two Spotted Sandpipers in winter plumage on the rocks at the dam of
Laurel Lake. Not much activity otherwise except for three Wood Ducks. I did
have an early sighting for a White-Throated Sparrow at my feeder on 8/17.
I've never had one that early before. David Raines
