The Sora found on the Bristol Christmas Bird Count is
a first for the count which was first conducted in 1931.
The species was twice reported in the 1950s on the
Abingdon CBC. There are no December or January
records for the species in Northeast Tennessee.
Stephen M. Russell heard it in the cattails at Stonemill
Marsh of Abingdon, Dec. 27, 1952, and
reported it on the Christmas bird count of that date.
Two years later, he again reported the Sora on the
Abingdon CBC on Dec 25, 1954. He noted it was
found "at its usual wintering spot at a mill pond
within the city limits of Abingdon." My archives
contain an entry from Carol Fleenor's field notes that
the species was first reported in winter Jan 30, 1951
at Stonemill Marsh. Fleenor was a mentor for
Russell and birded in the region for many years. I
knew him personally and was in the field with
Fleenor as late as Mar 1967.

Let's go birding . . .
