Southwest Virginia birders walked away with eight of the top 10 best birding
finds of the past year when recognition of birding accomplishments were
announced by the Bristol Bird Club Saturday night at the annual club
Christmas party.

The top 20 best bird finds dating back to the end of
November 2006 were presented. Much of the leading pace was provided
by members of the Buchanan County Bird Club and Russell County
Bird Club.

It was the first year that Southwest Virginia birders had demonstrated such
dominance of good records and birding success in the region.

The best bird find of the year was two Swallow-tailed Kites which were
present on the Nolichuckey River in Washington County, TN in August
and provided many exciting thrills for birders who came from far and
wide to see them. The Green-tailed Towhee at Galax, VA in February
was a close second.
