Musick's Campground
South Holston Lake
northeast Tenn.

A striking adult Sooty Tern casually flew past a group of a dozen or so
birders gathered at Musick's Campground this evening (8 Sep; just after
7:00 pm). We had been present to look for shorebirds & terns reported
earlier (morning & late afternoon - see my earlier post & one from Rack
Cross).

The Sooty Tern made one flight past us, turning & banking to show off
its coal-black mantle, before vanishing. It was flying downstream
toward the dam. I suspect that the chances of relocating it tomorrow
will be poor.

Conditions at the time of observation were overcast & drizzly, with the
last remnants of Frances moving northward. I had considered the fallout
of shorebirds & terns in the area to have been probable south-bound
migrants simply grounded by the inclement weather. However, the Sooty
Tern must have been carried north from the Gulf or Atlantic by Hurricane
Frances.
