Musick's Lakeside Campground
Sullivan Co., TN
The Whimbrel flew in at Egret Island just north of Musick's Campground in
Sullivan Co., TN tonight (9/8) while the nice group of birders were gathered in
a steady drizzle and clouds swept low over South Holston Lake.

It was one more layer of constantly unfolding birding drama at the campground
as the remanents of Hurricane Frances' lingering tropical depression provided
one exciting species after another.

Huddled in raincoats, under umbrellas and sheltering ourselves at the back of a
van,
Rack Cross, Tom McNiel, J. T. McNiel, Eric Smith, Wallace Coffey, Ron
Harrington, Mary Erwin, Judy Roach, Bill Grigsby, Dave Worley, Larry McDaniel,
Rick Knight, Bryan Stevens, Howard Langridge and Mike Poe all got to see the
bird.

The species has been showing up more often now since the first South Holston
and Musick's Campground record was discovered 30 July 1999 by Andy Jones and
Wallace Coffey. The 1999 bird appeared to be an adult in well-worn plumage.
It was the also a first Sullivan County record.

I am still aware of no records for far Southwest Virginia.

Other records at Musick's Campground and vicinity are: 25 May 2000 (10)
(Howard Langridge, Wallace Coffey, Larry McDaniel) and 16 Oct 2002 (1) TVA
Access near Musick's (Tess Cumbie, Reece Jamerson, Howard P. Langridge,
Bryan).

Elsewhere in Northeast Tennessee (Knight 1994) listed records: 4 Jun 1977 (2)
Austin Springs (Goodin, Dillenbeck, Jane Whitehead); 30-31 Aug 1980 (1) Big
Bald Mountain (George R. Mayfield, Jr.); 31 Jul-5 Aug 1987 (1) Round Bald, Roan
Mountain (Alan Weakley, Alan Smith).

It was a great evening.

Let's go birding....
