Rick Knight was presented the Tennessee Ornithological Society Distinguished Service Award at the society's annual banquet held at Knoxville, TN Saturday evening. It is presented in gratitude for dedication and contributions to Ornithology in Tennessee. Knight's distinguished service to the Tennessee Ornithological Society spans nearly four decades. His knowledge of state bird records and distribution is among the most thorough and complete. His published papers and editorship of TOS publications and bird records for the state has had a resounding impact on Tennessee ornithology. He is a member of the Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter at Elizabethton and the Bristol Bird Club. In the beginning, he contributed to TOS as Vice-President for East Tennessee - - 1979-1981. His distinguished service continued as he was: State Count Compiler - - 1982-1986. Regional compiler for The Season (Cumberland Plateau / Ridge & Valley Region) - - Fall 1986 to present. Editor of The Season - - Fall 1996 to present. Assistant Editor of The Migrant - - 1992-1996. Author or co-author of 30+ notes & articles in The Migrant. Breeding Bird Atlas project - - regional co-coordinator (northeast Tenn.). Bird Records Committee - - served several terms, including initial committee formation. TOS Nominating Committee and the Conservation & Research Funding Committee (one term each). Herndon Chapter of TOS - - President, Vice-Pres., Secretary, & Statistician. Bristol Chapter - - Field trip coordinator. Rick Knight's expertise and long-resume of species and projects in Tennessee is beyond the scope of this accounting. It is vast, to say the least. Member of the Tennessee Ornithological Society are pleased to recognize his near-life-time of accomplishments and to present him a 2013 Tennessee Ornithological Society Distinguished Service Award.
